why does english have the "th" sound

modern Scandinavians pronounce Thor as Allah

anglo autism

Has been there since days of yore, peoples of other languages just forgot how to pronounce it.
Based

interesting, english isn't normally a conservative language

Norsemen would’ve been disgusted by Norwegian if they’d ever heard it.

can't tell if you're a foreigner or just fucking stupid

th disapeared in around year 1000. Only icelandic and meme mainland dialects kept it.

>dental fricative
>meme
Thor is upset.

ÞÓÓÓÓÓÓÓÓÓÓÓR

english is neither meme nor mainland pal

Based, only non-subhuman old Norse derived language.
Second best country in North America.

English is also the only indo-european language that still has the proto-indo-european w in its original form
(this is not true, Elfdalian also has it, and possibly Scots but haven't seen any sources on Scots so that's pure guessing on my part)

come on guy we're all the same european people here :^)

well we are actually related (linguistically and genetically) but i don't think of scandinavia as the mainland either (even though technically it is)

meant only scandinavian languages.

My name is Thor lol

>N*rdics literally worship an inbred manlet

The absolute STATE of Scandinavia

Proto-Germanic /θ/ comes from Proto-Indo-European /t/ anyway. Scandis just restored the original pronunciation, that's all ;)

english is descended from old norse too m8

Maybe the Proto-indo European /t/ came from proto-Human /θ/

are you an actual mong? it literally is

why do you think english grammar is closest to skandi languages?
it's a language comprised of majority west germanic vocabulary, old norse grammar (and some vocabulary), and some latin loanwords
ffs learn about your own language before you post

That entire argument is from some new-age brainlet article
Literally 99% of linguists agree, English is derived from Old English, scandis just raped the language for a while a thousand years ago and made some of the grammar and vocabulary look like theirs

Because /th/ is anti LGBT by nature so dkkahzn

>English speakers pronounce Þór as "Thor"
Ghastly.

He's right, you know. Old English and Old Norse are almost identical.

Auld anglisc is a pee

1. That’s not true
2. If it were it still wouldn’t mean modern English is derived from old Norse

t.franko-celtic rapebaby

English comes from Low Germanic

>1. That’s not true
It is. Have you ever even glimpsed at OE and ON?

>2. If it were it still wouldn’t mean modern English is derived from old Norse
Derived does not imply entirely so. There are several sources it is derived from, ON being one of them.

They were as close as Italian and Spanish are today.

It is not derived from Old Norse in any way. It is not even a north Germanic language. There are loan words but it is not derived from it.

I’ve briefly studied ON and OE, they’re about as similar as Arabic and Hebrew
When you call a language a Scandinavian language it implies that it’s ON changed over time.
English is changed OE with aspects of other languages in it.

>Americans pronounce Donar as Thor
embarrassing

Exactly, I think we’re all (save the Brit) saying the same thing. Only a few brainlet people actually believe English is derived from ON.

>Around the second half of the 8th century, Old English mentions of a figure named Thunor (Þunor) are recorded, a figure who likely refers to an Old English version of the god.
Thunder

In Dutch lightning is called Donder.

>Anglos pronounce Wotan as "Odin"

Actually, in modern days only the sound of lightning is donder.

>caring about how heathens pronounce their false gods

t. heathen
