Would I be crazy to take a software development job in Ukraine? There's all these places in Kyiv hiring my exact skillset. I need to get out of the pacific northwest. I don't speak Ukrainian.

There's literally an ongoing war there
Dang. I thought it ended.
it's a meme war that got into a standstill and you're not really going to feel it in kiev. i guess there might be some economic repercussions due to cutting ties with russia, but i also imagine they got some gibs from the eu so i guess the situation outside of the actual areas where the fighting takes place is kindof the same as it was before. it's only actually a couple of thousand that are actually fighting (or at the moment, just sitting there doing nothing), out of like 50 million ukrainians and 150 million russians. i'd actually take it. if you end up not liking it, you can always go back home. if you're young you should try out making some radical moves in life.
plus you might learn some new stuff in your field of work.
I like what I'm hearing. I'm also looking at some places in the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, and Hungary at the moment. I miss travelling, I used to teach English in China, it was a hoot.
wrong
i went to east ukraine to weld some cars to make them more bulletproof
my dad is a pukovnik (colonel) in a serb paramilitary that fought in yugo wars but also went to train gaddafi's soldiers, fought for money in the middle east, etc
you never know what place might get hit over there, its an absolute russian playground right now and you cant possibly know in what house could the next artillery shell land
not even to mention that there is no strong front and all the fighters are irregulars, meaning random terrorism is likely
Oh dear... what's the current state of Serbia these days? Safe? Liveable?
i was talking about kiev, not eastern ukraine
these other options sound good as well. i'd probably pick hungary if i'd get to stay in budapest. more people speak english than in ukraine so i guess you'll have an easier time communicating. although this goes mainly for the capital, in smaller places it's equally shitty as far as getting around with english goes
>went to train gaddafi's soldiers
some real merc shit right there senpai
>ukraine
>ukrainian
No such things.
Why would you need to get out of the best part of America?
because even the best part of america is still worse than any given shithole in eastern europe
Seattle is fuckin' depressing. We're reaching favela-tier disparity in wealth, with people driving $100k cars past entire villages of tents.
You'll face a hard times if you don't speak Russian/Ukrainian.
Also political situation is very unstable, but overall safety's okay.
Ayy I'm in Greenwood.
Why do people always say this?
Ayyy. My buddy's friend got glassed in a bar in Greenwood.
The Baranoff, I'm guessing?
He was supposed to remove the kebab, but he joined it instead
Ironic
What kind of software developer skill you have that can't find a good paying job in US and wanna go to poor Ukraine?
There's no war in Kiev or anywhere near.
No offense to Ukrainians, but in Moscow they would pay more, if you intended to slav exotic.
I'm sure I could just go to work at Microsoft or Amazon or something, but I need a change of scenery. I'm primarily a Microsoft stack dev- C#, .net, xamarin, asp.net, EF, etc. I've had a good run at the shop I'm at now, but they're kind of running low on billable work atm, and there's a bunch of places in Kiev that want people with these skills. If they're willing to fly me out and give me a decent wage, fuck it, I'll go. I must go somewhere colder, with less tent cities.
Idk, I'm not much of a bar person. I just remember thinking, "Whoa, I should stay away from this area."
Not really, but I imagine that salary is definitely smaller because in USA IT salaries are fucking high.
In Poland IT is a bit better, working in Wrozlaw is like in Ukraine, but in EU and with somewhat better salary. Do not pick Warsaw, it's shit.
Anyway, you are welcome to try and as long as you don't behave like retarded P*le ITT it'll be fine.
There's a guy from Kharkiv who got 15 offers from Facebook but he refused them all because he said the ratio of salary/living costs are too damn good in Ukraine. Just market yourself as American so they could make you work with American clients.
I'll bet you could get a Ukrainian qt who will rob and rape you over there. I would do it.
>I must go somewhere colder
It's literally goes up to 40 °C sometimes
He will get one 100%, Ukrainian qts are sluts who just spread their legs in front of white firsties.
Is literally entirely okay and I say it when I support what putin done to the place
Lots of fags there that hate Russia and the place is a little poorer than it was, but doesn't mean Kiev is not a nice and safe city to visit of live
Hating Russia is only natural, nothing wrong with it
Hating animufags is natural, hating Russia gets your crimea chopped off, not safe.
Are you literally this retarded to ask such questions?
You don't wanna live in slavic shithole countries. It's ok to visit capitals as a tourist. Anything more is a no go. Everyone here with a shred of decency, self-respect and brains wants to go and stay go as far as they can go. US has a lot of different climate zones, so if you want a change of scenery, look for it in your country
killing Ukrainians is also normal
>serbshits
>subhumans
Pick two
Russian/Ukranian are hard languages, you won't speak it.
That's what I'm saying! If I make what I make in Kiev, instead of blowing it all on overpriced rent, I could live like a king!!!!!
I was considering Poland, too. Wtf is a P*le ITT? Do they not value politeness in Ukraine?
>40 °C
Holy fuck, maybe the global warming people were right. Are you saying Ukes don't consider themselves white?
Yes. Come to me, Ivanka.
>Are you literally this retarded to ask such questions?
Yes.
Idk, if I can learn Chinese, how hard can a language with semi-roman characters be? It's phonetic, right?
Temperature was always this high in summer around here you dingus
>my dad is a pukovnik (colonel) in a serb paramilitary that fought in yugo wars but also went to train gaddafi's soldiers, fought for money in the middle east, etc
is it just me or are serbs the real kebab
>Are you saying Ukes don't consider themselves white?
Yes, we think slavs are of a different race from Europeans.
I never really got that impression reading Chekhov, Tolstoy, etc. It seemed like those characters could have come from any 19th century Euro country. Then again, we don't have actual ethnicities in the USA... just skin color.
Fuck. It is a full 10° F cooler there right now, though. Those ten degrees are worth struggling for.
I know op is trolling but I find it funny how some people take firstworldness of other countries for granted. They basically think Ukraine is just America with lower cost of living so they expect the same level of infrastructure, mentality, lack of corruption, efficient administration etc. just they have to pay less. They don't understand life in America or western Europe is expensive because it provides high living standards and all your rights are protected. As an American in Ukraine you'll be treated just like a bag full of money everyone can steal from. Don't expect any help if you don't pay for it. Don't expect people to do their duties, if you don't pay for it individually. Hell, expect different prices for foreigners and locals everywhere and expect that Ukraine won't be any heap if you want to have the same living standards like in the US. Something that is considered a middle class house in the US, is a luxury house in Ukraine and costs more than in the States because you pay a "luxury fee".
I lived in China, I know how it is for white foreigners.
> infrastructure, mentality, lack of corruption, efficient administration
You've obviously never been to Seattle. We have none of those things. People don't help people here either, there is utterly no concept of civic duty, hence the armies of homeless.
Believe me, life in China is a piece of cake comparing to Ukraine.
I'm a Polish-Ukrainian mutt btw
if they pay enough it's normal
Because they're just Russians. And 90% speak Russian, even in Lviv
>even in Lviv
nope
You don't need ukrainian for a software job. But it would be tough in day to day life without russian/ukrainian, not many people speak english here.
It's a meme war contained in one region.
>the situation outside of the actual areas where the fighting takes place is kindof the same as it was before
No, it's worse everywhere economically. But this "war" shouldn't concern anyone visiting Kiev.
Go Czech Republic, i would say it's the more beautiful than the others in terms of architecture plus great beer.
Hating Russia is bad for your well-being. And we'll see how you are going to sing when Nord Stream 2 and Turkish stream are finished. The rhetoric is already changing, not so confident, eh :)
Czechia is cute indeed but Prague is already one of the most expensive cities in Europe. Not in Eastern Europe but all of Europe. Especially housing is insanely expensive there. It's cheaper to rent a flat in Frankfurt than in Prague despite 3 times higher wages.
Ukraine is still affordable even though not as much as some westerners think. I'd choose Lviv over Kiev as a place to live but it depends if you can find a job there - in Kiev it's easier. But the city is quite ugly desu
Warsaw is the only place with decent pays in Poland though. I doubt OP would be willing to work for $25,000/year somewhere in Wrocław.
ITT
Why exactly Ukraine? It's more poor than any other country in Eastern Europe except Albania and Moldavia.
Kiev is maybe nice, but i think Moscow or Warsaw or Budapest will be better places to work.
>Ukraine would somehow be an improvement
I recognize this OP. He was the same troll who was going to move to the Congo the other week.
Ukraine is just North Congo, so he's in the right place.
I actually have the same opportunity, a good IT job in either Moscow or Vladivostok.
I'm really thinking of going, I would love the experience (especially Vladivostok). I'm still learning russian though.
>he thinks vladivostok is anything more than a bunch of commieblocks
Wait, how do you know this?
They have tigers
In the Soviet era it was a port for the Pacific Fleet and a closed city you couldn't visit.
His friend told him. I know because his friend is a cousin of a friend of my friend.
So what? It's not that there are any mysteries, UFOs and aliens corpses he could see there. Soviets closed pretty much every border city just because it's at the border.
It was a major naval base, that was the main reason for it. Kaliningrad and Riga were closed cities for same reason. Usually anything with major military or strategic assets was barred from being visited without permission.
> visitvladivostok.ru
But really if you're not interested in traveling to Asian countries for (relatively) cheap or hiking in the wilderness while you're there, just go with Moscow. Vladik has some a few special attractions, but overall not too special as far as Russian cities go.
The equivalent would be if foreigners were banned from visiting Seattle because Boeing was based there or San Diego because it had a naval base.
It is very cheap here. A minimal american wage will have you living at an upper-middle class standard. Kyiv is an expensive shithole though, would not recommend. Not speaking ukrainian is ok if you speak russian, if you don't speak either - you're fucked. I see no downside if you live in an ok city without gopniks or other fags. Stay away from shit cities like Zaporizhzhya, Kherson and such, western cities are more civilized, but very annoying.
Sure but how does it make this city more interesting for a tourist? Does the fact that the city was closed make commieblocks look more appealing?
>croat means gypsy in hungarian
>hungarians ruled croats for all of recorded history
i think hungarians were onto something
horvát doesn't mean gypsy, what are you on a out?
>horvat doesnt mean gypsy
austro-hungarian emperor also called the whole population "human shit"
I'm a Texan living in Russia. I like it. can't imagine Ukraine is too much different. Ukraine is very poor but very cheap. I know that IT jobs in Russia and Belarus pay very well relative to the cost of living. if your wage is good relative to the local cost of living, I say go for it. Slavs are a lot of fun. what color will your wages be?
Where you live in Russia? Do you like it?
Moscow (on the outskirts, next to мкaд). I love being in Russia, but I do want to leave Moscow. I'm not a fan of big cities, it's expensive here, I want a farm, and as they say "мocквa - нe poccия". however most of my friends live in Moscow, the best airports are here, etc it is convenient
Thank you. Nature and wilderness are a big part of why I'm interested in Vladivostok. Also travelling to Asian countries is a plus.
>I'm a Texan living in Russia. I like it
CIA spy, I take it?
>farm
Try Kuban or Far East, you'll enjoy it.
>Nature and wilderness
Then go to Yakutia or Sakhalin. Amazing experience you'll never get anywhere else!
sadly I get more Americans looking suspiciously at me now than any Russian ever did. like implying that I'm a traitor or something. thankfully my family and close friends have been supportive. or at least shut up if they didn't like it.
Kuban is one place I was thinking, good weather there, but there's more competition for land there. why Far East? I imagine on the coast there might be a good balance of warm weather and lots of daylight during the growing seasons due to the high latitude?
I've also had Altai Krai recommended to me, for nature
Far East is good for their natural groceries and meat production traditions. Some Far Eastern cities are surprisingly developed and have transport connections with Eastern Asian countries and USA (Alaska)
but everything can be much more expensive than in European Russia
Also Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and Yakutsk both have terrific nature
Nice! How was your Russian when you first got there? Do people speak English there?
It really all depends on the cost of living/income ratio. I would be tempted take 25k in Warsaw over 120k in San Francisco because in SF basically all my money would go toward rent. And there's other factors involved.
How's the internet in Ukraine outside of big cities?
non-existant?
