How are YOU preparing for the Asian century?

Japanese is going to be worthless in the Asian century. Learn Mandarin instead.
I learnt a bit of Japanese because my gf is Japanese but in her exact words "only nerds learn Japanese", this was evident when I first went to Japanese classes and they were all obviously weebs.
Honestly, it shouldn't even be called the Asian century, it's going to be the Chinese century.
Jack Long
ruined the pic for, are you happy now?

I'd learn Mandarin but I don't like how it sounds.
Monosyllabic languages just sound ugly as fuck. Japanese is cute.
Owen Wood
The only good thing about Japanese is that it opens you up to whole bunch of entertainment, you can find a job better in Japan, and you can meet Japanese girls.
I agree I like the sound of Japanese more than Mandarin, I even like Cantonese more than Mandarin. But Mandarin will just be better vocationally.
Easton Bailey
I've met many people from both Japan and China, Japanese were very considerate and kind while Chinese were soulless and greedy rude dishonest fucks, generally speaking of course. Can't imagine leaving there and doing business with Chinese must be a nightmare.
I think that when learning a language that hard it's better to be motivated by many things, not just that it will look good on my resume.

Why would i be preparing for something that'll never happen?
Alexander Gutierrez
I agree - I've been to Mainland China 4 times and lived in Japan. But if you're trying to prepare for the 'Asian century', Japanese will be absolutely useless outside of low tier jobs like working at connivence stores, which India already is ahead of everyone else. You could teach English or Spanish I guess but it would be easier to find a teaching job in China, Taiwan or Korea.
Anthony Harris
Just waiting until you guys kill each other like the Europeans will... and then for the African century.
I was about to save that and you fucking ruined it, why do you do this?
Dylan Morris
You're probably right but in my sector I don't think I'm going to need anything besides English any time soon.
And everyone I've meet that has dealt with Chinese hasn't held them in high regard.
Not to mention that as you said, there's barely any Chinese media that interests me.
Anthony Perry
Taiwan seems like a great place, as well as Hong Kong, I might learn it later and if I want to knowing many characters will be quite a shortcut.
Since learning Japanese is mostly a seen stuff, not being a weeb and speaking 4 languages might make me stand out. Just gotta get my Spanish and English certified before going. I'm hoping to get into foreign relations or translation once I've reached a better level of fluency. With the Olympics coming I guess there's gonna be a lot of opportunities too
Dylan Martinez
No effect on my life so I don't care. I would still be a 178cm manlet even if the moon nazis were in power.
Adam Perry
Yes business with the Chinese can be difficult, especially because they always try to undercut - its just the culture, Chinese do the same to Chinese.
Taiwan is awesome, I visited for New Years last year. The people are the best of both worlds, as nice as the Japanese and as talkative and confident as the Chinese. Also, there is a ton of traditional Chinese packed in one small area. I'm planning to cycle around the whole island next year.
Actually you're right about the Olympics, as well as that, I think Japan is slowly opening their borders to more foreign workers, but I think these are just the low pay jobs. My gf worked at a Lawson for years and she was on like 700yen an hour at age 22, which is just nuts imo.

Does Taipei looks as cool as HongKong? I watched so many movies directed there and I just love the atmosphere.
If I'm not progressing fast enough I might spend a year in Australia before going, what city do you recommend ? From the big ones
Aaron Collins
There's a very cute Mongolian short girl with short boyish hair where I work. I found out she has a lot of tatoos on her arm, immediately lost interest.
Brandon Morris
I definitely prefer Hong Kong, I'm actually going back again in 10 days. Its such a fun city.
If you spend a year then you could do multiple cities. I live in Brisbane, but have been to Melbourne and Sydney hundreds of times. Melbourne tends to have the best reputation for culture but you'll find great culture in any of those cities. I prefer the climate in Brisbane the most, it is usually around 20-25C at midday during the winter, whereas Melbourne and Sydney are a lot colder. Sydney would be best for beaches. There are also lots of daytrips you can do like to the Blue Mountains. Brissy is the same, you can go to the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast. Not sure about Melbourne.
I'd recommend Sydney and Melbourne for summer and Brisbane in the winter.
Not sure about any other cities since I haven't been west of QLD, NSW and VIC.
