I would never touch berries growing in the city, either dogs or humans have pissed on them
when they're in season
june-july
just for wild asparagus
huckleberries are really popular to pick here, but they're a bitch because they don't grow under 9,000ft (2700m) elevation. Huckleberry Pie and ice cream is 10/10
>go out to pick berries, shrooms etc
Is this some kind of survival training?
No it's just fun to pick berries and take in all of the nature. Then you get to go home and make foods out of them.
A couple times a year, but only mushrooms. Berries are no fun to pick.
Thats not a thing here. I don't think there are any berries or mushrooms worth eating where I am from
I tried to get "those" mushrooms once, but I could not find a field with the proper kind of cow
3-4 times
I pick oregano and salt once a year.
Never.
What kind of loser does this? I can't imagine someone who has friends doing this, maybe if it's your job or something but then you are a loser so.
what's wrong with berry picking? it's relaxing.
Never
But my grandma has a garden with cherry and hazelnut trees
When I was a small kid they also had many blackberries and a large walnut tree, but they had to cut these plants and the walnut tree unfortunately
not regulary, usually for mushrooms only. my parents have a huge garden with berries. but I moved out a few years ago.
I don't know, I'm a loser so I can see myself doing this to kill some time, but I can't imagine a normal person wasting his time doing shit like this.
Whenever they are ready.
I have blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, grapes, cherries, apples, pears, paw paw fruit, beans, currants, cherry tomatoes, rhubarb, mulberry, and a few kinds of edible mushrooms, in my yard.
All grow "wild" now, I don't keep them up.
well it helps that berries here are rare and you have to explore the top of mountains for them. Would you consider hiking a thing for losers too?
Hiking is a pretty normal activity here, so no.
I pick them when they're ready. I have blueberries and raspberries plants in my garden. The blueberries are ripping. No raspberries yet, had to move the plants in the early spring.
Berry picking and hiking are basically the same activity so stop trying to shit on it
does rhubarb count?
if yes, 20 times this summer
Not shitting on it, I just can't see normal people doing that shit, it's sounds something old people do when they are bored as fuck. Maybe people who have a family life going out picking berries with kids, but I'm talking about men in their 20's as I assume most people here are.
yeah, you make pie or what?
I make pies with all my rhubarb, I don't know what else to do with it
Pies, lemonade, sallads, to eat straight etc.
They go well with fish thanks to the sourness and I have heard of people pickling it or using it as a glaze when barbequeing
There's blackberries during the summer and a fig tree in the backyard
I make jelly out of it pretty often. You can make jelly out of anything.
>Boil your rhubarb in a pot with just a bit of water careful not to scorch it and keep stirring, say 20-30min
>press down on the rhubarb a bit with a spatula or something and cut it up, the whole point is to get the juices out
>get a cheesecloth over a bowl and pour your juice through it into the bowl
>this part is a little tricky, add pectin to make it jelly-er, add some form of acid to make it thicker as desired and add a fuckton of sugar. Keep in mind the water you used to boil the fruit is about how much of the jelly sauce you'll have.
>get your pot again that you just poured out of, clean it a bit and pour your new jelly mixture in. Bring to a boil as fast as possible, nuke it.
>keep stirring to dissolve all the sugar
>test for "done-ness"
>get a large metal spoon and pick up some of the mixture and tilt it a lot. If it sortof folds over itself like a thick wave it's done
>pour your shit into super fucking clean air tight jars
wa la
Again you can do this with literally anything. You can make potatoe jelly if you want or corn jelly lol
4-12
I'll have to try that, I love rhubarb
My grandpa used to make lots of jelly each summer out of the berries and cherries we kids picked from the garden
There always was a whole shelf full of glasses with jelly
Noice memories
How much you gather at once and how much time you spend there?
Usually i wont leave before least 3/5 full bucket.
Debending from goods it takes usually 6hours to a full day
It doesnt really count since its originally humanplanted.
there are no places to pick wild fruits here. sometimes morel mushrooms grow near the river but they're over-hunted every season and you'd be extremely lucky to find even one.
currently growing squash, zucc, radishes, tomatoes and and sunflowers in my backyard garden tho.
I dont, every year somebody get damage of forest mushrooms, but my ma is doing it during autumn.
I've never eaten it though.
Just got home from work, here's my apricot/jalapeño jelly. Sweet n' Spicy.
Yeah it's super easy, you literally just boil a liquid twice a child could do it. And you can impress/feel all fancy when other people see it and stuff. It's one of my go-to gifts I give to coworkers or bring to gatherings. I tie a cute little ribbon around the jar. Because you make so much it costs pennies and it's a pretty cool gift.
:D
0 because i live in a city
is this a new ebin pasta :DDD
>there are no places to pick wild fruits here
Fucking what, where?
Get out da house, boy.
Nice
The US is large man
