in america if you get arrested you go to county jail first where you sit until your court sentencing where they move you to a prison. you can get out of the jail before your court date if you pay the bail amount. i sat in jail for three weeks while my mom got the money together to bail me out

Jail and prison are two separate institutions. One is basically a holding area where you wait to be sentenced while the other is a literal prison where you lose many of your civil/political rights.
