Fenno-swedes are those originating from old aristocracy that was too shit to live in Sweden from some 1600-1800, some leftover swedish soldiers' families and random swedes that just moved to Finland at the time that learned finnish too. These days they have their own underground culture of being happy and healthy and somewhat wealthy on the coast. They're all dickheads though and should be moved to Sweden along with the whole of Åland. There's probably books about this but I'll tell some. Finnish witchery is more like shamanism rather than the european abracadabra with the devil lurking everywhere.
People were very superstitious from pagan times until very late 1800 hundreds and early 20th century. Paganism reasoned everything had a soul and literally everything was therefore magically affectable. Even christian people (everyone after joining Sweden) would spell or more like ask for their tools to work better, for work to be done faster, for good sleep, erections, wheat to grow, sickness to cure. All the time quite literally 24/7, with little poems in kalevala-lenght or without if they didn't know the right one. They would leave food for little gnomes in the house and show their ass to the woods to keep animals away etc and no one could take that superstition away. Shamans had more potent spells and were quite respected as no other doctors were availeable plus they put on a show.
So pretty much everyone knew a little bit of witchery. It was made illegal in 1600-1700 I don't remember, even though the authorities didn't think magic was real. Some people could accuse others of cursing their cattle or having a little spawn steal their butter and there would be a trial. Some people got executed and then burned, mostly men and of all the people most of them were the weird ones of the villages or just crazies enjoying their witch-title.
Nowadays this neo-pagan thing has come up and some people enjoy it. I think it's a bit of a fedora-thing to do but hey, atleast they're not larping as vikings since that's not us and never was. Too bad finnish paganism has no written sources other than a few hundred years old, so we'll never know what it was really like.

Superstition is not self help, it's straight up and honest believing supernatural to be natural and real. Also I was trying to explain how the spells differed from what is considered magic today and elsewhere then.
I don't see how mythology is mostly a memory technique. Sounds a bit like a selfmade theory? I'd say culture plays a more important role. And yes, that's how it was done, my issue was that it's sad we don't have much of anything on paper to make it a credible testimony. If that corrupts my view it's only natural. Researchers might know some details of the pagan life more accurately but I'm not one.

The reasons why Western-Finns have the lowest score of all the regions in Finland in your cherry picked image could have a lot of reasons, one of the big ones probably being found in the schools.
