I can only speak for Australia in saying that the nurses here are terrible. There's a whole other side to nursing that people aren't aware of. We're so used to seeing the professional and compassionate side of nurses that we forget to think about how they might act out of earshot, we take for granted that they always act in a professional manner but that is simply not true. This is the underbelly of nursing: gossiping about patients, making fun of patients, various patient privacy violations and bullying and intimidation of other medical staff. Nursing is a cut-throat world.
They tend to gossip out of earshot of the patient because they see it as being done in confidence, but that whole idea breaks down when the patient overhears them. This leaves the nurse in a position where they must deny the gossip and act as of nothing ever happened.

Unfortunately, nurses making fun of patients and gossiping about penis sizes out of earshot is an inconvenient reality that not many want to acknowledge.
They are professional around the patient but the moment they're out of earshot of the patient they become unprofessional. They have no integrity and see gossiping and making fun of patients as being fine so long as it is done out of earshot of the patient.
So next time you see a nurse remember that their definition of privacy is one that they are exempt from. As far as they are concerned, professionalism means maintaining their composure out of earshot, and then gossiping and making fun of the patient out of earshot.

Nurses are only professionals in the sense that they'll maintain their composure when dealing with the patient, but that doesn't mean they won't make fun of the patient out of earshot, because they most certainly do.

The hospital espouses values of respect, dignity and privacy but they are only practised in the superficial sense.
Nurses will put on a professional act in front of the patient, but the moment they are out of earshot they will proceed to make fun of and gossip about the patient and sometimes even divulge private information i.e. penis size.

There's an expectation that nurses will respect a patient privacy and dignity, it goes beyond just being etiquette. Rules regarding this are set out in the Nursing and Midwifery code of conduct.

The Nursing and Midwifery code of conduct states that nurses are meant to be mindful of their actions as their actions may affect the general public's view of them. If the public has a negative view of nurses this may affect a patient's ability to seek treatment.
Nurses should be mindful of the way they act and think before they make gossip or make fun of a patient. Sadly, that isn't always the case.
