I find it funny that we complain about our "400 year long night" union in Denmark-Norway, yet we somehow conveniently forget the fact that Iceland was subjugated (not made into a union state) under the King of Norway from 1260-1380.
That's 120 YEARS of cruel Norwegian rule over Icelanders, which was far worse than anything the danes ever did to us. It's hypocritical honestly.

Gissur Þorvaldsson, an Icelandic chieftain, decided it would be a good idea to join "Norgesveldet" (the "norwegian empire" sort of).
I exaggerated a bit in my post, but essentially the Icelanders had to
1. Pay tax to the Crown of Norway and
2. Submit to the King of Norway/Norway annexing Iceland.
In return, they got a code of law from our greatest lawmaker (Magnus Lagabote), guaranteed peace and protection and increased trade relations between the mainland and Iceland. (Norwegian ships pledged to sail there more often)

As I said, I exaggerated. But the differences in degree between this and Denmark-Norway are several:
1) Denmark-Norway wasn't a tax colony, which is what Iceland ended up becoming for Norway in the period of 1260-1380.
2) Norway wasn't "annexed", it was simply in a union under the common Danish monarch.
You could argue that even if it was more severe than Denmark-Norway, it's still not cruel, but oh well. That was just my comparison.

There was a famine in 1808 when Denmark for the last time waged war on Sweden, and we had enemies on all sides. The corn that we usually imported didn't arrive from Denmark and we couldn't get anything from Sweden either.
