The average Jow Forums poster was not even born back then.
the curtain is still there
I went behind it this year for the first time, and everything seemed a bit different, worse, more timid, grimmer
my grandad married my granny in a church secretly, in a different town
my grannies cousin was locked up in the shed because she wanted to go fight in 1956
im not baptized, my dad hates religion and i share that view with him, we had a normal life because we werent ex military or kulaks from other regime
bread and cocoadrinks were better, it was normal for a 20y old couple to buy a flat and start making kids given they have jobs
you had to wait for your car to buy it, you couldnt be unemployed, gypsies were tamed
you were building socialism, you had to attend some celebrations, you werent a boyscout but a roadmaker (youth organisation, i wasnt in one but many were)
life was simple but it was achieved by indebting the country, idk what exactly you wana know
Read Kundersa's Unbearable lightness of being
what did people do for fun?
and how did things change after independence? Better or worse?
it was popular to have a weekend house, sports, i even read a book from that time listing a bunch of activities and it had sex in it, like doing it in nature, party members had a bunch of events to attend, opposition members played tag and chase with the "secret" police
russians were sent home, everybody suddenly become a strong supporter or democracy while praying their reports on other ppl wont come to surface, factories closed, ppl losing their jobs, ppl stole what they could from the state companies, usually went right into the hands of the already existing elites
it got worse, then slowly getting better
the beginning of the 90s was a pretty big mess all around. The russians left everything in shambles when they buggered off. GTA type shit was normal.
Before that though, the USSR would hold workers parades. They had to bribe people to take part in it.
Homeowners would have to share their houses with people. Imagine the government telling you a random family would now live on your second floor.
Once an old friend of mine and some buddies smuggled a dead pig out of a factory.
