we set pretty crazy goals for "winning" wars these days. It's not just "defeat the enemy". It's turn the chunk of land you're fighting on into a strong, prosperous, and democratic long-term ally.

Like, in Iraq, it wasn't enough to prevent Saddam from getting WMDs, we had kill him, and we had to depose his Bathist government; but that wasn't enough either, we had to turn it into a democracy, but that wasn't enough either, they have to be a politically stable and relatively safe place, but that wasn't enough either, they have to be a prosperous and strong long-term ally. Since we didn't achieve all of those goals, we certainly lost.

By the same logic, I guess you can say Britain lost WWII. doesn't matter that the Germans were defeated, Britain entered the war to secure Poland's independence, and failed at that.

the sad truth is that the Vietnam war is taught as the US invasion of a single country called Vietnam. it isn't taught as the US supporting South Vietnam in a Vietnamese civil war. I wish i could find my old American History textbook from high school. Almost all of the Vietnam war section focuses on domestic protests in the US, and South/North Vietnam aren't mentioned as separate sides.
