Real talk here. Immigrants tend to be lower class, especially illegal immigrants ("""refugees""" to Europe, sudacas to the USA). With automation and AI erasing many lower and middle class jobs from existence, why should we Westerners believe immigration is a safe long-term strategy? At some point in the future, we're going to have a mass of unemployed people with no real skills living in cultural ghettoes unable to speak our home languages, because there are no jobs left for them. Why let them in?
I understand the capital class's reason -- they want to depress wages and not pay for automation R&D. But their competitors are just going to force them out, because machines will inevitably become cheaper. They might not be economical or profitable at picking strawberries from the field now, but you better believe that a strawberry picker powered by a machine learning dataset is going to become cheaper than some Juan or Mohammed off the back of a truck at 6am.
Right now in terms of AI research and investment, the USA is #1, China is #2, and Germany is something like #8. I forget the ones in the middle. We need to harness this power to create wealth and use that wealth to encourage natalism and birthrate for citizens instead of importing third worlders to temporarily "fix" the issue. It's only a matter of convincing the capital-holders and investors that this is important. Taxation may be the key here.
