knowing less than three languages fluently is grounds for suicide, not even joking
only knowing 1 language unironically makes you dumb
I haven't seen anyone on Jow Forums treat someone who is learning their language like that.
>>"KEK LOOK AT THE AMERICAN STRUGGLING TO LEARN EVERYONE POINT AND LAUGH AT HOW STUPID HE IS LMAO LOL"
Only Eurofags do this. Learn some Mandarin and chinks will shower you with compliments.
counting euro dialects as languages also makes you a brainlet
you need to be fluent in two languages outside your language family tree, definitely at least one major asian language
If you don't know one language from each continent, you are a subhuman. It's that simple.
They are even more fascinated if you know Cantonese or better yet Fuzhou dialect.
English, Hebrew, and ?
Fuck I don't know Antarctic language.
Better find some penguins to chat with.
reptillian
Why would you even need to learn a language besides english unless you're a fag?
theres basically no other language to learn here which is functionally useful. Indonesia does nothing and they have tons of languages anyway, all rthe pacific islander speak english. We're far away from Europe. Chinese is the meme answer but it might be useful for a few very niche jobs if you want to go there to work.
Even America has Spanish which will always be useful
Don't feel bad, most ""euros"" are monolingual too
It makes you smarter.
because the fact that I only know one language while almost everyone else in the world knows at least two makes me feel inadequate and self conscious.
So does doing literally anything else with a couple thousand hours you nigger.
How about get based as fuck at electric guitar or keyboard? I can tell you firsthand being really good at an instrument is super useful in real life. Especially if you can improv.
>canadian education
Because irrelevant little shitstain countries need attention too
????
You are REQUIRED to learn English in this world. What language other than Swedish do you know?
dette fåvä
just keep practicing and try to immerse yourself. People might laugh at you at first but most people appreciate the effort, and don't mind offering advice if you ask nicely. At least then you're not the American who speaks English slowly because they think they will suddenly understand English that way.
racist chart probably crreated by huwaito d*vil
And then 5 years later...
>I was forced to learn English from a young age through no choice of my own, that means I'm better than you
what the fuck do you mean?
most of europe is not monolingual because we know our mother tounge and english.
third language is common in sweden and all over europe.
In europe you learn a third language, either spanish, french or german usually.
I studied german and I am planning on a fourth one which many people also do learn.
seriously this is true as hell
i tried learning french once and gave it up quickly cus french people were dicks and got angry at me for using dictionaries (how the fuck else am i supposed to learn words you snail fucking prick)
Past few years however I been picking up Japanese and Japs are super encouraging, they appreciate me eve just knowing Hiragana but the fact I know Kanji and a lot of slang and can keep up a conversation, they really appreciate it
>tfw being English and speaking English
OMG IT'S TERRIBLE
Who cares? Language is something 2-year olds master. You feel smart doing something a literal fucking baby can?
French are rude to all people for any reason whatsoever though.
omega chad
>americans will literally refuse to learn a new language out of spite even though spanish is the majority language in many industrial workplaces
unless you want to live somewhere else, putting effort into learning a language other than English is a big waste of time
it's alright if you actually have fun doing it but those 10 slightly impressed foreigners per year are simply not worth it
I know it all too well.
I thank god every day I speak English instead of some retarded foreign shite.
tfw tried learning Swedish but Swedish people laugh at my accent and switch to English
redpilled.
>lives in the west
>he doesn't speak arabic yet
user what are you waiting ? you're going to be left behind
arabic probably, they learn it at school
im 21, is it too late to learn two more languages? i only know english and some spanish and latin from high school. Want to learn a european language like german or italian and an asian language like chinese, japanese, or arabic
Age isn't a factor. Don't fall for the only children can learn meme.
Come visit /lang/ and check out the wiki
>Asian languages
Way too late to be fluent, early enough to be sounding like a dumb sinoboo/weeb whenever you talk but is able to grab some Asian pussies if you look okay and white
>European languages
Go ahead but they're just not that different from USA and it only helps communication between we wuz 1/32 germans/irish Americans
>im 21, is it too late to learn two more languages?
Do you want the truth or do you want some limp-wristed bleeding-heart pep talk?
you're just too much of a pussy to handle the bant mate
who are you to decide that? checkmate pig
Don't worry. It's never too late. You just need to work even harder now.
I'm God. Enjoy your melanoma in 2023.
I agree with this sand negro. it isnt impressive learning spanish if your italian , or dutch if you speak english. it's only impressive if you can speak at least 6 languages of your family tree, but even this isnt as challenging as learning an east asian language
The truth
being young and learning a language is only beneficial, to not have an accent and speaking fast.
It's actually a fucking meme that children learn languages better than adults. It's really inefficient to learn a language as a kid, which is full immersion and having someone correcting you every single minute you talk. being able to read and write can make you learn a language twice as fast some child who would still sound like a child after learning a language in a year's time
you deserve it for being american desu
if that's english proffiecency , I think that chart is bullshit, or at least not including the millions of european boomers who are monolingual , last time i checked german english proffiency was around 50 %
I really want to learn German or Russian but hearing how hard they are puts me off
aha I , I did some reasearch and found that chart is indeed bullshit
>The EF English Proficiency Index was created by EF Education First, an educational company, to measure the English communication skills of adults in countries where English is not an official language. This measurement is determined by a free exam that is administered online to individuals who are interested in knowing their level of English. It is considered a survey and not a controlled research project. Researchers have determined that respondents are likely to be young, urban adults and not a proper sample of the total population.

whats the point in learning something everyone else can fucking learn?
thats why i never bothered learning the guitar because 1 in 5 plebs can do it
Okay. You're in for a world of pain and frustration. You'll have to make serious sacrifices to get the same results kids get effortlessly. You know how some people have their shin bones broken so they can grow a couple of inches? You'll have to do the linguistic equivalent. You'll have to haul yourself up in your room for months reading and listening to stuff non-stop to make any real progress. Moving to a place where the language is spoken won't do SHIT for you, osmosis is a meme.
I grew up in an education system that taught me French and English, really it's no big deal. The best thing that came out of it is that it got me a chill government job while all my friends are getting their asses kicked in the private sector.
SOME Chinese shower you with compliments and are excited to see you trying to learn. Namely, well-educated people. A lot of others are still assholes.
Hasn't this guy moved back to the US now?
>Way too late to be fluent
This is categorically untrue. You do need to expend a lot more effort in order to become fluent, but there are plenty of examples of white people going to China and becoming perfectly fluent in Mandarin, to the point where they have a larger vocabulary and fuck up the tones less than many native Chinese.
found a legit study in german about english knowledge in germany
pretty much this study says 65.5 % of germans have some knowledge of english even if its a small amount.
30.5% of people ages 40-49 say they only know very little english
29,5 30-39 year olds can only in serious cases make themselves understood.
only 2.1% of employees can speak english at a business level, and 10,5% can just speak it fluently .
But there is hope because 54% of 20-29 year olds say they can speak english very well even excellent. But almost the other half of the 20-29 years olds say they have very little knowledge
Im kind of glad germans suck at English, it makes me feel good about learning it since it indicates I didnt learn it for nothing
I notice your last point with many foreigners in person and online. It seems they learn English to a greater extent sometimes than native speakers. Yes they still have an accent but they can be very articulate
I agree. A lot of people will say "apologies for poor English" then say something without any mistakes. I think they just get insecure about having an accent in real life and people treating them like they're stupid because of it.
>POLAND
>high proficiency
holy fuck why do people even use wikipedia anymore
such a fucking shit site
>whats the point in learning something everyone else can fucking learn?
>thats why i never bothered learning the guitar because 1 in 5 plebs can do it
Lol what kind of senseless thinking is this? By that logic you should never do anything.
Okay then, tomorrow I will set sail on my quest and not look back until it is finished! 2 hrs a day minimum until I become good enough to read books and news and also watch shows in movies in the language. I will not forget your wise words greek friend

>tfw a few years away from 30 and barely A1 in 2-3 other languages
thanks for being completely unhelpful every step of the way, Euros, wasn't even rude about it but you still shit on me and in 10+ years of attempting to learn languages I have next to nothing to show for it
hate my life
Languages aren't usually taught in grade schools here (which is the best age for learning a language). Most schools won't teach foreign languages until high school.
hashirama stomps
>tfw american who has learned mandarin
feels good
how long did it take?
the journey of language learning never truly ends
you understand the language though? how long did it take to get to that point from the time you started making a conscious effort to learn it?
probably 3 years to feel comfortable in both informal (talking with people, ordering stuff in restaurants) and formal (dealing with visas/immigration stuff, opening a bank account, reading newspapers and discussing politics) situations
How to not continue being a loser, fellas
US just occupies 20% of the world GDP.
you don't need to learn other languages.
>dad didn't let mom teach me Afrikaans because it would be useless in America
Moansch du dasch mi mit deim deitsch verstian?
Language is the only thing keeping the nation state alive
Arabic is Hebrew with a less nasal accent.
>im 21
Jow Forums is a 25+ website, get out.
Piss off English teacher.
Of course that had to be said by an American
Just another example of why Americans don't have culture
I was gonna learn a new language but then I remembered I never talk to people anyway
hilf mir bitte, ich mochte glucklich zu sein
>Moansch du dasch mi mit deim deitsch verstian?
Möchtest du ????? mich mit deinem Deutsch verstehen?
This hurts my head.
Not bad
"Meinst du, du würdest mich mit deinem Deutsch verstehen?" Would be standard German
Many Finns will literally refuse to learn Swedish
Language is the only thing keeping culture alive as well.
Based
>Meinst du
I feel dumb for not getting that.
But is dasch simply dass?
Meinst du, dass mich mit deinem Deutsch verstehen?
Is that correct in standard German?
>10+ years
>A1
Stop being so fucking dumb then
Don't feel dumb, Germans don't get it either, but you're trying at least.
dasch would be tätest in standard german and the sentence you provided wouldn't be correct in Germany at least cause you need the du in front of mich. It's just that in Austria you can pretty much drop all du's and it would still be understood.
I could've just as well have said "Moansch dasch mi ..."
sorry son, I didn't study consistently and whenever I tried to practice or ask for help people would just make fun of me or speak only English
Apparently being able to string 3 words together is "high proficiency"
Okay. I understand for standard German. It may be strange but if I want to directly translate to English does it read like this?
Moansch dasch mi mit deim Deitsch verstian?
Think you that me with your German understand?
Thanks.
>In europe you learn a third language
You are taught a third language in school but it doesn't mean you learn anything.
grow some hide faggot
thought someone was speaking Pennsylvania German in here but it's just some Austrian mountain peasant dialect
>Think you that me with your German understand?
It'd rather be "would" instead of "that", but yeh.
Oh sweetie, how naive
whaddaya mean
Wait. I may be tired but I don't understand 'dasch'.
So dasch is actually a verb like tätest?
As in:
Moansch du, dasch du mi mit deim Deitsch verstian?
Meinst du, tätest du mich mit deinem Deutsch verstehen?
In my head I hear dasch = dass = that.
I keep reading it like:
Meinst du, dass du mich mit deinem Deutsch verstehen?
Sorry.
