What? Even fucking Greece or Portugal were richer than GDR in terms of availability of goods for an average citizen or currency's worth.
It's not only that a citizen of GDR couldn't visit West Germany, because the government didn't allow him to do it (which was true), but he couldn't even survive one week there, since East German currency wasn't convertible and in the "grey market" it was worth way less than the official rate (you couldn't exchange money for), so average wage of an average worker was something like $100/month.
But if you judge "economic success" by the number of tanks produced, then yes, GDR was pretty successful.

Funny fact - German language was the main foreign language in schools. Older generation (as my parents) can speak German. Also, because GDR was part of eastern block, people in usst doesn't had bad feeling against germans.
