Modern day East Germany used to be inhabited by West Slavs until the Wendish Crusade happened and they got genocided/assimilated
Many Poles emigrated from areas annexed by Germany after the partitions of Poland to work in Germany proper and settled and germanised themselves there
In medieval Poland many Germans settled in the cities and villages as part of the Ostsiedlung and many eventually assimilated and became Poles

So there was some interbreeding but obviously there are still massive genetic differences between both nations and Germans and Poles do look different

My great-grandfather was born in Silesia, and after the war he decided to be Polish and to stay in Poland
His two brothers didn't and they evacuated when the Red Army started advancing and decided that they're going to be German
The family was founded by a family of Austrian settlers who arrived some 200 years ago and settled in a Polish village and started mixing with Poles
Most Silesians had family histories like this

In Upper Silesia I need to clarify, which was majority Polish before the war
Lower Silesia of course was almost completely German and I wouldn't call the people who lived there Silesian

I anyone wondered why westernmost Poland is so liberal despite being populated largely by Poles from the East, then the answer is that the massive population movement created environment similar to the American frontier. Old social bonds were shattered and people from sometimes very different background lived side by side.

American West was also for long the hotbed of liberal and progressive politics.

Most yes, but not everyone. My family is from Lubuskie very close to German border. In my grandmother's village there were several families that were Germans who stayed. It was public secret - everyone knew that, nobody talked about it and I was friends with kids from these families. They intermarried with Poles and there was nothing that distinguished them aside from surnames, which they wrote using Polish spelling.

A story from a relative is similar. Family lived in Moravia, some great-grandfather was Austrian. After the war most of the family went to Bavaria or further west, one uncle randomly decided that he's Slovak - and moved to what now is Slovakia. Years later there's a german and a slovak branch of the family
