Why do people keep using that retarded "1%" figure?

There's gigantic disparity within the "1%". A yearly salary of 300k is enough to put you in the 1%. Of course, 300k allows you to live a very comfortable lifestyle, but it's absolutely fucking NOTHING compared to literal billionaires. People who earn 300k don't really have any disproportionate amount of power and influence, whereas people who earn >100M do.

"The 0.01%" would be a much more relevant metric than "the 1%".

The 1% are still mostly salary earners, the 0.1% have the limit of what I'd consider to be an ethical amount of wealth. Anyone above 0.01% should be taxed 95% and jailed for hiding even a penny in tax havens, because nothing should make you entitled to live like a god.

I agree. It is all relative. The average Slovak earns 750 euro or so in net income per month (or 10 424 USD a year) which is tiny compared to Westerner salaries, but still in the top 6.98 percent! See globalrichlist.com .

This is because the world is fucking poor, or, more accurately, Westerners are fucking rich. The median income of the world is around 7.5 USD a day or 2737.5 USD a year gapminder.org/tools/#$chart-type=mountain . And this is actually a huge improvement to the past, for most of human history, the average income was around 1 USD a day, and that is inflation adjusted.

Same it's not even so much the material possessions that you get out of it but having the ability to have as many kids as you want, to send them to whatever schools you want and to be able to travel anywhere in the world on a whim and eat whatever food you want anytime. It would be insane.

Yeah. But the 1 percent are not really filthy rich. On a global level, earning 35k a year makes you 1 percent, which is actually below average of many 1st world countries. In the US context, it means making 300K a year which is awesome but not being a billionare or millionare at all.
