Dr. Harvey Kellogg said that circumcision was a cure for boys caught masturbating, as puritans thought sexuality was evil. However, the only people who actually knew how to circumcise people were Jewish, so they saw an incredible business opportunity in promoting this fringe idea to the masses. Pretty much every man from the late 19th to mid 20th century got circumcised, and many of our immigrants did it to fit in. The later waves of migrants, however, were less accepting of this practice and thus the rates of circumcision have gone down. It's only kept alive by mutilated men who think there's nothing wrong with them and retarded women who think they're allowed to make choices for the bodies of other people.

This is all that is going on. People just don’t think much of it when they have a son. The doctor asks if they want their child to be circumcised, and the parent just kind of goes with it.
