Russian is depressing. I'm probably around B1 level but it feels very frustrating. Understanding texts (and people to a certain extent) is getting easier, grammar-wise I guess. But the fucking vocab man, I keep mixing up words and forgetting the same words over and over again (special mention to бывaть, must have looked up this one over a dozen times and still can't remember it). And then there's the verbs, which really make me doubt about my ability to ever master Russian.
Real struggle at the moment is actually talking, I'm feeling extremely unconfident and struggle to say the simplest things without pausing every other word to think about how to say what I want to say.

I'm learning thai, and I was expecting it to be some kind of chinese dialect or a language with so many chinese loan words that it's almost indistinguishable like Japanese. But nope, instead I got simplified hindi with arabic and english loan words. How did this happen?
Daniel Thomas
Gracias. :)

its rare for english speakers to acctually commit since they either dont need the language, or the people switch to english when they try to practice i got that from seeing american threads asking "whats the trick to X language" as if he thought he could learn in a few days.

Übrigens kann jemand bitte das korregieren? Und welches Verb wäre im letzten Satz geeigneter, „korregieren“ oder „nachsehen“? Und welches Adjektiv wäre im letzten Satz besser, „geeignet“ oder „passend“?
Aaron Jackson
Well it sounds different phonetically, but a lot of the sanskrit words (which are a significant portion of the language) are pronounced pretty accurately. Hindi Basa, Thai Pasa, meaning language.
Chase Phillips

Sorry if this is a stupid question but didn't the Anglo-Saxons use moon runes instead of the latin alphabet?
James Gomez
>oameni ar trebui să schimbe râde cu râde That’s not what the original says, but anyway: -oamenii (with two i); it’s the definite article. I can’t explain why the definite article is used here while in English it’s not; maybe in Italian the definite would be used too? I don’t know, that’s just the way it is. -râde: that’s the third person singular and infinitive of the verb ‘to laugh’. The noun ‘laughter’ which had to be used here is ‘râs’ (which is the participle of the verb ‘a râde’, and means ‘lynx’ too) What the original actually said would be ‘Oamenii ar trebui să primească râs pentru râs, și de asemenea falsitate/neadevăr pentru minciuni.’ By the way the word ‘falsitate’ refers more to the human trait of two-facedness than to what’s here, so something like ‘neadevăr’ (un-truth) would be appropriate.
Oliver Sullivan
They had runes but almost everything they wrote down that we have is in the Latin alphabet. Runes were used for inscriptions or as substitute for words which were pronounced the same. Also in some riddles.
e.g. ᛗ rune is called ''mann'' meaning ''man'', so you could use that single rune instead of spelling out ''mann'' using the Roman letters. e.g. 'Ic eom ᛗ' = 'Ic eom man.'
Dominic Cruz
By the way congrats on reaching the conjunctive too, you’re progressing fast. How long ago did you start?
>-oamenii (with two i); it’s the definite article. I can’t explain why the definite article is used here while in English it’s not; maybe in Italian the definite would be used too? I don’t know, that’s just the way it is. Yes we use it in italian too, that was a stupid mistake I made
>-râde So what is the plural of râs?
>How long ago did you start? Two weeks ago lol.
>By the way congrats on reaching the conjunctive too, By conjunctive you mean the tense we put after the să (which is basically identical to the indicative except for the 3rd person) or the "aș ai ar" etc.. + infinitive?
Logan Young
>So what is the plural of râs? un râs — două râsete (laughs) (neutru) un râs — doi râși (lynxes) (masculin) >Two weeks ago lol. I’m unironically impressed, seriously. >By conjunctive you mean... The one after ‘să’. Pro tip: if the normal third person ends in ‘-e’the conjunctive ends in ‘-ă’ and vice versa.

yea I wasn't paying enough attention by the looks of it, I should put actual effort in it next time; thank you for being so patient and helpful user ;__;
no no user you should look up to him either way, italian is even closer than french and he seems to have more time to study it's not a competition, the only one you have to get ahead of is yourself, but without getting ahead of yourself :^) it's like you have omelette they have pizza, y'know? potato - pancetta, tomato - bruschetta
Can German Learners point me in the right direction.. I did Duolingo and nearly finished the course. And I bought a text book but it's so boring. What resources or methods do you use
Charles Cooper
if you don't wish to spend money, you can find an old (late 70s / early 80s) german assimil on libgen, and can find the audio for it just by googling. I'll see if i can find the links when i have the time.
>I want to learn German without any effort anyone got any ideas?
Brandon Hall
Now I'm all pumped up, I'll never forget those words user
Well, I bought 2 exercices books (grammar, tenses and vocabulary) and I try to exercise one hour a day. I try to listen to german radio but it feels weird since I don't understand what they're saying. I think I should take private lessons at the Goethe Institut but it's not open yet
actually, nvm, the book is in french, and there isn't a version of it in english that i can find.
there's a link here : archive.org/download/langue02 though if you're interested. there's also some other, presumably as old, editions of "sans peine" books for other languages with audio there too.
you'd probably just be better off pirating newer stuff though.

if you get past the point where you're unintelligible people will stop asking to switch to english
The website for installing it is: lwt.sourceforge.net/ Just set the language to French, then cut+past French content from wherever, preferably whatever has both text+audio.
