My friend volunteered to teach math in africa and it didn't require her to speak any african language , maybe it's the same for japan.

when I took a Spanish course at community college, the teacher taught the entire year without speaking English. From day 1, it was all in Spanish.

As long as you obtain Cambridge Proficiency or something you should be good to go.
