hard to say, both have a venerable history with pop music

one things for certain, neither really has any earth shattering opera

Brits have King Crimson, Americans have Swans. I'd say Brits pull ahead by a hair.

Music is one of the very very few good things America does better than the UK

Suppose the US has Einstein on the Beach. Still not 'earth shattering' but more than respectable.

Hard to say, they've both produced a hell of a lot of good music over the decades.

UK stronk

Hardly. Music is one of the things where both Britain and America blow the rest of the world away.

Britain hasn't made anything notable this decade anyway. As late as the 2000s you still had some indie rock and pop stars.

Bong

But as the American poster says their music is dying and can't recover anymore. They've been americanised too much.

I love eng more. But they both are great at pop misic.

america has never produced a song as brilliant as this one:

discordant cacophony

Brits invented industrial, drum and bass / techstep, so brits have a better music by default

Just out of curiosity, what do you think about this one?

Agreed. You can call America vs. Britain either way and I wouldn't be mad about it but there's a huge power gap between those two cunts and everyone else.

UK(in past)
nowadays music from both countries is utter trash with super rare exceptions in USA

USA, much better, sorry, british music is very well too, though.

I love both in terms of numerous genres, but for me I'd have to choose the UK. But let's celebrate a great British-American band.

youtube.com/watch?v=JDG2m5hN1vo

The US invented the entire genres of rock and electronic music.

the actual list is:
1. US
2. UK
3. doesn't matter because it's almost certainly garbage

Define notable. You mention pop stars, and seeing as just a couple of years ago when something like 5-6 of the top 10 best selling albums sold worldwide were by British artists proves you wrong.

>The US invented the entire genres of rock and electronic music.

So did the UK. Both countries are total beasts in making music and creating entire genres/

>US invented the entire genres of rock
Not really.

had I mimicked them singing my accent would be much better than it actually is...

what would "rock" even be without British bands

when I sing along I say begin instead of pretend

Go to bed, Mom.

UK, no doubt
And I love their hot accent

uk (non biased fact)

>Origins of rock and roll
Yeah the origins of rock and roll properly represents the "invention" of an entire genre over the course of many decades.

Are any other countries even trying lmao.

Certainly not very hard. I like a little bit of shit from France and Sweden but none of it is well known.

>I can invent a car without a wheel

When I think of every significant name this decade, British ones seem relatively absent unless maybe Chvrches but they and their fans are cancer anyway.

in terms of contemporary music, america is better (even if there's very little good contemporary music from either country)
however from the 50s the the 90s the UK wins
good shit
this pretty much
british electronic music has always been better
the actual list:
1. uk
2. usa
3. germany
4. japan
also, post rock arguably originates from both the uk and the us (slint & talk talk) yet german music is the biggest influence on that genre in my experience
makes me think of chungking express every time i hear this song. good song and film

one direction are the greatest band of all time

Adele and Ed Sheeran alone are two of the biggest selling artists this decade. Also Ellie Goulding, Sam Smith, Calvin Harris, Florence and the Machine, Dua Lipa, Coldplay still up there as well as a whole host of electronic/DJs and indie rock bands. Yeah you may not like most of these artists but they have sold well worldwide in recent years and especially in the US which isn't always an easy market to break for British artists.

>however from the 50s the the 90s the UK wins
That's debatable and especially in the 90s, British bands were not as relevant in the US (that being during the time of Britpop which never made much impact here).

60s-80s yes although some movements like glam rock and NWOBM only had a few out of a huge number of bands that got big in the US. For example, Americans know little of Gary Glitter or Slade.

yeah the whole thing's debatable
i probably like more 90s american rock bands bands but prefer 90s british electronic artists

NWOBM by and large never established much of an American presence because the rock press were championing New Wave at the time and mostly disliked metal/AOR and record labels preferred New Wave because it was a singles/radio-friendly genre while AOR was not.

Music/band geeks knew about glam, NWOBM, and Britpop, most of the average rock audience didn't. As everyone knows, Oasis were a niche band confined to alternative radio in the US while they were so insanely enormous in Britain in the mid-90s that people became burned out on them very fast.

The US and UK usually switch between the who has the biggest boyband curently, it's America's turn now so dunno where their band is at the moment. The Korean boybands don't count because their fans are mentally ill.

>Americans know little of Gary Glitter or Slade.

Sweet is the best glam rock band of all time. T. Rex up there too.

Wasn't Gary Glitter a child rapist or something?

M8 I hardly even care about lyrics. I listen to music for the sound much more than the words. Hell I can't even clearly make out half the words in English songs even.

>Pink Floyd
>King Crimson
>Genesis
how can anyone think American is better, even if they're both top tier

For some reason, Ireland had a musical golden age in the 80s and absolutely nothing since.

I really like cheesy 80's/90's British pop-rock and no one can stop me.

Well that's kind of true desu. And I have to admit that most of the times you guys are the innovators who invent whole new genres of music.

>M8 I hardly even care about lyrics

This is true. I love samba and bossa nova yet I can't understand Portuguese.

You mean smug critics like Christgau and Dave Marsh?

youtube.com/watch?v=jGYfI9cU69Y

British late 70's / early 80's funky stuff is awesome

The big question is why is the English-speaking world coming up with all the interesting genres of music? That includes classic rock, punk, metal, rap, jazz, etc.

Is the rest of the world retarded?

youtube.com/watch?v=oOFha17v1KY

Germany has good industrial music. My tastes have softened over time but I used to love KMFDM and Wumpscut and shit.

I think it was less critics than it was record labels. They're in business to make a profit and singles/radio hits bring most of the money in the music industry. Well, they didn't like 70s AOR because it wasn't singles-based so they invested heavily in disco and New Wave instead, which were singles-based and more profitable.

It happened in the 90s again. The record industry by 1996 were desperate to get rid of grunge and replace it with manufactured tween pop.

>I think it was less critics than it was record labels

You wouldn't believe how much Payola happened with magazines and critics back then. They'd get bribed to promote artists with money, drugs, backstage passes, that sort of thing.

Michael Jackson made a _bit_ more more than Motorhead. Fuck, Lemmy said he made more from royalty checks of Metallica covering his songs than he ever did from album sales.

youtube.com/watch?v=mvBwNz04Ois

I can name shittons of NDW/Industrial bands, but you won't care anyway.

why was this allowed? taylor swift doesn't have the lungs for it.

youtube.com/watch?v=s4z5XlG6ras

American bands have historically tended to have a more raw, sloppy garage sound and usually are dominated by the frontman while the other guys in the group arefairly anonymous. British bands seem to be more balanced most of the time with all the members being equal, and they also tend to have a more polished, poppy sound.

With exceptions. Of course there are American groups like RHCP where all the band members are equal and it's not just the frontman that people care about, but mostly this is the case.

Scorpions? Kraftwerk? Tokio Hotel? Yeah those are real obscure and nobody outside Germany knows of them.

FREUDE SCHĂ–NER GĂ–TTERFUNKEN

I know he's gay, but that's still funny.
