Imagine we build monuments of the RA everywhere in Poland because we are grateful forever. It is history now and it can't be changed. What I can tell you that young Poles do not hold a grudge against you like for instance my parents and grandparents. I think our relation will definately improve within next 10 years if you keep your people, missiles and other military stuff within your own borders. Time heals all wounds. Germany was defeated in '45 and since then our relations are only improving. Even though it requires a lot from both sides we are good neighbours I'd say.

On the other hand last Soviet soldier left Poland as far as I remember in '93 so it was not long time ago. Since then our economy is booming, our quality of life improved like hell so it only confirms us that Warsaw pact was nothing but misery and disaster.

But to make feel a bit better I have to say that every Pole I know that has been to Russia has very but very good opinion on Russians and I never heard anything bad about your people. You are friendly and always welcoming everyone. I think we should start developing our relations without politicians. It will be hard but we (not all of us) forgave Germans so in the future I guess the same thing could happen with Russians.

anyhow, what did your grandfather tell about the time in Germany during WW2? Was he treated properly by the German family he had to work for? My grandma was a little child in WW2 and told me she remembers they had two (slave) laborers during the war, they were supposed to help with the large garden. One was a girl from Belgium, her father knew my great grandfather and apparently he wanted his daughter to be with my great grandfathers' family because he knew she'd be ok there. My grandma said the Belgian girl was very kind. And then there was a Polish girl, my grandma said she was very rebellious, which I suppose is understandable looking at how Poles were treated in comparison to Belgians

He told not much, he died when I was young. However, there are some VERY interesting things I know or have deduced.

He lived in the part of Poland that became Wartheland. He got transported very early in the war, probably in spring 1940. He wound up in one Germans farmer's (gramps always called them "bauer") farmstead and was treated like dirt. He told once that he and other labourers were stealing pig fodder, because their own food was far worse. There were also placed in unheated barn. Before winter, my gramps was sent to another bauer for some reason. Luckily, as my gramps was certain he wouldn't survive the war if he stayed at that place.

So he wound up at another farmstead, and here is where it's starting to get interesting. Quite soon he grew pretty close to his bauer, which was obviously in violation to law and would bring severe repercussions to both my gramps and his bauer. But it was some very small rural community, so everyone gave zero fucks about the law. My gramps basically became a family member and apparently became attached to the bauer's daughter. Now, I admire his balls, hitting on a German girl was something punished by death. I dunno whether they fucked, but apparently by gramps was treated as potential son-in-law for after the war. When the war finally ended, my gramps was in a dilemma whether to go back home or stay, and the bauer reportedly advised him to stay. Somehow however, my gramps went back to Poland and married a Polish girl, which is why I am here. Nevertheless, the bauer's daughter was writing hum really looong letters way into 1990s. My gramps burned them before he died, so no one knows what was in there.

I honestly plan to trip to Lower Saxony one day and see the place and even perhaps meet descendants of people whom my gramps knew.

Her great-grandfather had to work for a butcher in Bavaria during the war. Later he told his family that he was treated very good and that he never in his life had so much meat to eat like there. (keep in mind that people back then could afford meat daily)
Sadly enough the communist shot him for being a traitor (probably enjoying life too much...) short after he was home again and his son fought for decades (Iirc untill the fall of the soviet union in the early 90s) to restore his fathers reputation and to get him burried properly.
