Not really, but they've moved on from being places to shop at to places to hang out and talk due to the massive bias towards online shopping developed in past few years

Some shopping centres are low activity tho. People commute to work in towns and cities with more economic activity and do their shopping there often, so they end up living in towns where there isn't much going on.
