national flag is not supposed to be original, but meaningful
and the more established, more traditional, more historical the symbols are, the better the flag is

which is why wacky shit like leafs, stars, asymmetric shapes, irregular shapes etc all look like some cringy fanfiction, not the actual meaningful original thing

The maple leaf has been the symbol of Canada for over 300 years and has lots of historic meaning here.

Have you seen the Serbian flag?

It's a pathetic symbol, but one nonetheless.

No it's litteraly the result of an art contest and is inspired by the Canadian royal military college flag, truly a bullshit flag.

What do you have against the Southen Cross OP? It's actually pretty cool to look at, N*rthoids have an inferior night sky.

What was that? Kinkajou?

You know I'm right. Symbolic value of the maple leaf is huge larp anyway since an overwhelming part of production/export/consumption maple products is done in Québec. Ontario barely have any apiculture so it's not like it's a traditionnaly anglo industry as well. I think more maple syrup is consumed in new england than all anglo canada together.

*Acericulture I meant

a possum

It's not because of maple syrup. It has just always represented Canada in the same way the clover does Ireland, roses for England, fleur-de-lys for France, thistle of Scotland, etc. Even in early crests that showed Canadian identity, you would get a lions passant for England, fleur-de-lys for France, harp for Ireland, a lion rampant for Scotland, and maple leaves for Canada itself (look at the crest on the red ensign).
In WWI many of the trenches had white chalky walls, it was traditional for soldiers to carve their name, rank, hometown, and often a little drawing. Sometimes Canadians would draw a beaver or fish but most Canadians would draw a maple leaf, the same one tbat adorned their uniforms and their gravestones. In 1848, in Anglo Ontario, it was chosen as the ogficial emblem of Canada.

If you think it's because of the maple syrup memes you're an idiot

How is brazil flag not original

Yes, it's a long running larp.

That would be the definition of a tradition or cultural symbol

Why are you so ashamed to admit the "national identity" of your country is a larp? Australia is a larp too, along with every other country that only came to exist as an independent entity in the 20th century. It's no biggy.

OP's a dumbass but I think he's pointing out the use of star constellations on flags as being overdone

I have no idea what you're talking about.

Anyway I mentionned maple syrup since it's a main production and export. Doesn't change the fact acericulture was and remains a majorly french canadian industry. Just like the beaver comes from Pelt trade and so on. It's a symbol picked up by the british, thus a larp.

The pelt trade was British though. Only labourers were French. The businesses were owned and managed by mostly Scots. It also kept the Americans out of the west

I know not contesting the beaver, just the leaf

What would be a better symbol of Canada than the one that had been used for centuries and is in keeping with the European tradition of using a particular plant as a national emblem?

Just saying the leaf is a larp and the flag design inspired by this one was selected by a jury from a contest to draw the present canadian flag.
