I understand countries take loans on purpose to stimulate economy and it isn't even desirable to be in zero debt, but not when the economy is struggling and the money is only used to fund existing services that still face cuts every year.

We're still in a worse economic situation than 2007. Probably the only EU country that hasn't recovered.

Wouldn't want to use a car to travel to and from most cities/towns here even if we had 8-lane motorways. The distances between the major settlements are only really suitable for air travel. Our government still want to throw away $47B+ on a huge road project on the Western coast that'll probably be obsolete at the time its finished.
