Culturally we are an extension of western Europe, as are Australia and New Zealand. America has a unique culture, it's shitty, but unique.
You will notice that no one cares if a Canadian or and Aussie says they are French, Irish, Anglo, etc., in fact, Euros will often ask if we are Anglo or French. When an American says they are Anglo, French, German, Irish, etc., everyone tells them to go fuck themselves. It's partially because we lack a strong identity independent of Europe, other than a few unimportant things like accents, sports, and foods, and partially because most don't mind being associated with Aussies, Kiwis, or Canadians whereas they hate the idea of being associated with yanks.

I truly believe that the biggest difference between America and western Europe/Can/Aus/NZ is that American culture is centered around the individual. Americans care only for themselves and always have going back to at least the mid-18th century.
