Because I think German sounds pleasant and I just rolled with it. I don't get the whole "it sounds harsh" thing. German metal is top tier too I've found after Spanish metal.
The only thing I don't like is there being no native speakers around irl which of course I knew about beforehand. I'd really like to spend some time in German to really become fluent.

Have you read Momo? I finished it today. Excellent book I really enjoyed it.
But this makes me wonder, I try to always read things that are slightly too hard for me so that I'm forced to push myself a bit and learn more. Good strategy? How high of a difficulty is too high? I find that I can enjoy books much more when I can understand 80-90% (gives learning room without totally sacrificing just the basic enjoyment from reading a story). Any other reading tips anons can provide?

My learning "method" was rather haphazard (I've actually been learning on and off for ~4.5 years now). I began with meme shit like Duolingo and Memrise in the beginning. After finishing those I picked up workbooks and grinded through those. This got me to around A2 or borderline B1 at which point I started obsessively watching Easy German on youtube (I still watch new videos when they come out). Then I brute forced my way through German translations of the first four Harry Potter books while listening to the German audiobooks simultaneously (I don't like HP enough to finish the series).
After that I stopped explicitly learning and now I just read stuff when I have the time. I can read almost fluently but my writing and speaking are horrendous. (I took some sort of official placement test about a year ago and got B2.)

I’d be impressed by someone succeeding in teaching himself an obscure language, not in trying. And maybe it’s because I’m spanish and basque is not exotic to me, but there has to be a ton of resources to learn it, so it’s really not that obscure.
