what was happening was known about for a long time, there were numerous cases, trails, investigations into the case but cover ups and problems with witness intimidation etc blighted them. as late as 2010 rotherham council attempted to have an injunction put on newspapers to stop them from reporting on the murder of one of the girls. the extent of it was revealed gradually, but it didn't really cause anything because it only confirmed what people in the area already knew.
