FAQ: >How do I learn a language? What is the best way to learn one? How should I improve on certain aspects? Go to a course >When can I move on to a different language? Never >What language should I learn Whichever
People can still find it by searching for lang at least
Samuel Cox
As always can't decide what language to learn.
Self-Teaching myself Japanese now focusing on usable vocabulary.
Thinking about self teaching Dutch since it's so similar to English.
Kind of want to study French & German at university. Well I ever make up my mind....probably not.
Jaxon Nelson
Good attempt, but put /lang/ in the subject field next time
Nolan Campbell
Commit to something, you gotta build a routine to keep anything going. Self teaching is fine and all but try to get some real life application in somewhere. Chances are you won't find a language you're absolutely in love with so just learn to love the process itself first and foremost.
Matthew Flores
>since it's so similar to English. Don't learn a language based on that. It's one thing to not learn one because of difficulty but idiotic to learn one just because it's easy
Angel Scott
That's some pretty solid advice, thanks buddy. I think I just need to find a language I like.
I've got a routine starting with Japanese, so I'll keep it up until I change my mind.
I was going to learn it in addition to any other language(s). Sure there maybe some difficulties.
However.... >Can you help me? >Kan U me helpen? ...For the sake of being able to work in Dutchland, why not.

>I was going to learn it in addition to any other language(s). Sure there maybe some difficulties. Also not a good idea to learn multiple at once, even easy ones
Anthony Hill
It ok, once I accidentally made a /language/ thread due to autocorrect

So, does anyone have any experience using the input-based learning for languages other than Japanese? I don't go as far as AJATT, but I do try to use a lot of "real" input, such as reading NHK news or supernative.
I haven't tried it with any other languages, so I don't have a sense of how effective this method would be for languages that are more familiar to English.
Austin Bennett
Wrong. If you're at two different levels of understanding, learning two has few extra difficulties.
Andrew Miller
That was implied but there's still more than a "few"
Christian Clark
What other language could I learn other than Cantonese ? God made me this way. Why would I do anything else ?
What other resources are there for Cantonese? Anyone else here learning?
I want to learn canto!!!

?A dónde vas?

Not that long, it's just beyond frustrating when I practice saying the word out loud a million times and write it down with the accent that I forgot two days later anyway. Also kind of annoying to not be able to read text correctly, since if I'm not reading it with the correct stress in my head I'll likely not easily recognize the same word spoken

I can now understand some more German; I allegedly had German classes in high-school but they were badly done and I was a lazy lil shit but I understand enough to find my way around when in Germany and understand some of the texts they have in museums for instance (most of that is due to Dutch tho) and people say I can read French better than people who've studied it because I have this weird way of saying R I ever so briefly dabbled into basic mandarin and japanes before I went on trips to those countries I would literally go for Persian if it meant getting an iranian waifu

Yes, I spent 3 weeks in Iran in March/April, had a great time. You saw me post in a tfw no mena gf thread a while back. Really want to go back one day. In fact, my romantic view of the place means I'm regularly thinking these days >I wonder if I could get a job in Iran with somewhat decent pay But that aside, I bought two books for learning (Can't be arsed to grab them from next to my bed now), as well as two short persian novels for when I felt up to really torturing myself. In addition to that, found myself a Persian discord, grinded vocab with memrise.
i-ik heb geen autisme, ik doe alleen alsof~~ >say something nice links - land van de beste stukadoors rechts - land van de beste stukadoorprojecten
ah so you're that user >I wonder if I could get a job in Iran with somewhat decent pay most likely not oetz, it's a very closed-off land from what I understood from my iranian friends; very friendly and all if you're a tourist but otherwise it really is very hard and frankly I doubt you'd actually like it there just go there on vacation whenever you feel like seeing the place I had the same reaction after my japan trip; amazing place to visit but I'd never live there, their work-life balance is completely mental
but ok so it really needs some dedication by the sound of it short itinerary/summary of when you went there? did you rent a car/public transport/organized tour? I fear I might have to go alone when I decide to actually go
Went with my dad who spent time in the middle-east before as part of NATO (Lebanon, Egypt).
Shortest itinerary >Esfehan, Yazd, Shiraz A longer version is pic related. I mainly acted as guide/deciding of where to go. We walked to a lot of places within the cities, and took cabs for things nearby/outside the cities (like Persepolis, Mount Soffeh). Our day to day was basically >wake up at hotel >breakfast >look at list and google maps what to visit today >go for that, order cab if needed >Spend time chilling and walking around We also spent more time at most locations than the average tourist I feel like, we spent like an hour and a half at Hafez's tomb, which if you're just sightseeing can be really much shorter. Also just hung around at Naqsh-e Jahan in Esfahan a lot. Really comfy place. And like you said, people are very friendly to tourists, more than happy to talk to you (unless they're stuck-up ultraconservatives, but even then the culture basically dictates they have to be at least somewhat polite and help you out with questions). As for the going alone, that should be no big issue. Locals will be more than happy to talk to you if you feel like socializing, you might even get invited to dinner at someone's house. (Decline a few times beforehand to make sure it's an actual invitation. Ta'arof is a hell social norm).
>most likely not oetz, True, and like I said, my view is highly romanticized/biased because it was such a great vacation which would not be comparable to actual daily life there. Still definitely want to go back on vacation at least yeah.
Memrise doesn't seem like an awful idea, though I'm also still looking for something to practice grammar I try to do that with wiktionary but I forget
