The model for streaming has shifted over time.
For a while it was a hangout thing where you'd have the stream on because the streamer was likable.
I think of that as the HotshotGG era.
Over time money from ads dropped and streamers discovered that letting donations equate "stream participation" in one form or another can make them a lot of money realtive to what else they got.
Twitch noticed this and introduced it as part of the platform.
These days most stream function this way, you basically pay to get noticed and be 'part' of the stream, either y getting a callout or showing up on screen or whatever.
I think the new model is fundamentally flawed because the more people pay the more of the stream becomes callouts and crap for money, to where the actual streamer is irrelevant and the steam becomes a platform for payed shitposting.
I've seen streamers hold out for a long time before selling out and I can't really blame them, the money is on the table and I can't say I woulden't do the same.
The end result is that only small streams are anything close to usable, or streams with a medium audience and a streamer with restraint.
An example of the latter would be Grubby.
