Its not the only coin with smart contracts, but Sergey has been working on it since 2011 and all of the others have popped up in the last year due to the crypto boom.
I honestly doubt any others will have a working product before him and alot of those coins are probably just scams using buzzwords.
Sergey had no incentive to do this since 2011 as crypto and the blockchain were completely irrelevant at the time.
