Brainlet post of the year. The US cold war approach and even post 9/11 approach to conflict and intervention has always been more ideological than anything. One of the main reasons we lost in Vietnam is because we propped up a regime that was corrupt but non-communist. Populist support was non-existant outside of the large metropolitan areas. The US does an amazing job at misunderstanding the wants and needs of the people in other countries time and time again which leads to resentment.

The military strategy employed in Vietnam was by and large a huge failure. Marines would fight tooth and nail for some ubiquitously numbered hill and after losing half the platoon to get the top would be airlifted off the hill back to base.

Policy wise you're right the Chinese and Russians had very different implementations of their view of communism which would lead to a complete rift in the 70's, but throughout the vietnam war the USSR and China both supplied the NVA with Artillery, AA and Flak guns, and small arms like the AK-47.
