After William Jennings Bryan bombed out twice, the Democrats ran an intellectually formidable, but un-charismatic judge from New York named Alton Parker. One historian wrote in the 1940s that "The [1904 election] was one of the few in American history where it is my opinion that both candidates would have made an excellent president." Ideologically, Parker was not greatly different from Roosevelt and his main message was that the president was too autocratic and that government should be "one of laws and the Constitution rather than of men." In the end, TR's charisma and incumbent's advantage brought him an easy victory, Parker winning just the South, although at the county level, the GOP made strong penetration even there.
Bryan would be dusted off for one more go in 1908 before being retired for good from the presidential running, but he was compensated with becoming Wilson's secretary of state.
