They might look terrible on paper, but then you realize that you can raise an army numbering in the hundreds in like two minutes.

I thought the vikings were cool. Those longships were rad, and the berzerker ability on the elite units was pretty hardcore

of course the spanish gunpowder units were a lot of fun

Those cataphracts man. Many think byz is a cheap civ because pikes and skirms (and camels) are cheaper, but those catas are the bane of every noob.

Also being able to use houses as walls is dope, along with Fire Ships.

It's the best all-round Civ, excels in turtling and building a massive navy.

I used to use Franks all the time, then I realized their castle unit was shit and swiched to Byzantines.

Samurai are shit except for countering castle special unit which they cut to ribbons. Just counter him with champions.

Goth is the only true answer. Build that base economy, build 12 barracks and 2 siege workshops and just fucking pump out the giant hordes of gothic Huscarls, Halberdiers and Champions with Battering Ram support. Any sane man would tremble.

1. Byzantines
Cheap trash units, access to most of the best units, huge hp for late game buildings, Cataphracts are expensive but their large tech tree makes it possible to make a diverse army of whatever you need.

2. Mongols
Fast-firing horse archers. Fucking mangudai. Drill makes onagers and rams run like Ferraris. Mangudai. Also mangudai.

3. Spanish
Large tech tree, exploitable unique units and tech, stupidly broken ships, broken blacksmith, their main flaw is the lack of good archers.

For deathmatch it has to be Goths and Huns though.

Not just that, but they used to have town centres with +2 ATTACK AND +5 RANGE. Which meant that you could gather enough wood, take your villagers close to the enemy base, build a town centre and an archery there, garrison villagers and archers, and watch the base burn because nothing came close enough to attack your German town centre while you rained arrows on them. Most of the AOE2 Teuton updates were focused on nerfing the town centres.
