Americans don't understand the concept of buying an apartment, we only rent them here. When you buy an apartment, you aren't buying property
Well, I bought an apartment (100sqm), it's my property.
Who do you rent them from if nobody buys them ?
Nobody owns a single room, people who own apartments usually own the entire complex.
code monkey
It is very weird. Here, most people buy one apartment, not the entire building.
well they own the complex to rent them out.

Still living with my mom, my gf and I are planing to live together after she graduate from college
So it's impossible to buy one apartment in the US ?
For example, we own our apartment, a basement, and a share of the common areas (corridors, roofs, etc).

Illustrator/comic artist/translator (when I got no commissions)
I live alone in a house in the countryside my family owns, would love to have fiber connection but paying rent would be a waste.
What is the difference ?
Apartments are built and owned by a corporation, then leased out to tenants, Condominums are owned by many different parties, all protected under an HOA and land management company. Condos are basically houses stacked atop one another
Well, then that's definitely a condo. We call that "appartement" here.
Same in Brazil, we call it "apartamento", "Condomínio" it's only for a complex of buldings or houses

Think of it as a copropriété. It's indeed the norm in France.
Yes, but for us "Appartement" is merely the type of housing (as opposed to a detached house). Copropriété is the way the building is separated.
