They are paid more because they have qualifications and experience in specialised domains. If you are an Indian who has worked abroad in something like that for a few years, you can get a high paying job too.

Also, by looking at how many hours of work it takes to buy one week's worth of groceries, eurostat have shown that Norway is by far the cheapest european country to live in (because then you are taking salary into account), which these figures are a consequense of.

I did a personal calculation and came to the conclusion that for Germany, you can usually use the factor 1.06 to 1.08 to get an estimate for the west German income stats excluding eastern German federal states. When I use these estimates there really isn't anything to be envious about except the oil fund.
