There's a reason paragraphs are spaced more than individual lines in most places. If a paragraph break in unindented text comes where the line normally ends, how can you spot the division? Extra space after paragraphs of maybe 40–80% of the leading looks nicer and is easier to read.

Jow Forums forces you to put in a blank line (equivalent to 100% of the leading), but it's better than mashing your paragraphs together into an uninterrupted mess.

My theory is that people do this because "American" doesn't really mean as much to some people, given how (comparatively) new the country is. Germany is mostly people with German ancestors, France is mostly people with French ancestors, Russia is mostly people with Russian ancestors, etc. People here have ancestors from fucking everywhere, and probably half the culture is a mashup of those cultures.

Lots of families still maintain the traditions and cultural values of the immigrants they're descended from, too. They might speak another language at home more than English, eat a particular kind of food and/or follow a particular religion. This is the kind of shit people form countries around. Just look at the Balkans: Croats, Serbs, and Bosnians are all South Slavs. They all speak dialects of the same Slavic language, but they based entire national identities around Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Islam. They have a shitton in common, but religion was too big a deal for them to just be Yugoslavia.

TL;DR: the US is a mutt of a country. Americans eat every kind of food, speak every language, and practice every religion, so people cling to their ancestors' nationalities to define themselves.

I know why people do it, but it's still fucking retarded. Someone who's 80% anglo and 10% native American shouldn't cling to their 10% german when they already live in the nation that blends the first two cultures.
