When Jinnah created Pakistan he wanted it to be a secular state, like Turkey. Eventually Pakistan sided with the US against the Soviet and Islamized themselves, leading to military rule and Zia Ul Haq doing full Shariah.

India lagged because opposite to Pakistan we declared ourselves secular and socialist in 1975, secular was ok but the socialist part sucked. Goverment took over the means of production and economic growth slowed down.

It was after the USSR collapsed that our biggest ally disappeared off the map, so we were forced to open up the already crumbling economy in 1991.
