Democrats want them to become a state because it would probably swing the electorate in their favor. Republicans don't for that reason.
As an average citizen desu I don't care - although I could easily see it being like a Scotland situation where they end up being this special snowflake state, demanding special treatment, causing constitutional issues when they want to secede over baseball or some shit.. and unlike Scotland that brings a lot to the UK, PR would bring basically zero benefit.
