South Carolina was also founded as an aristocratic plantation colony, but centered more on rice and indigo. These crops were very labor intensive and black slave gangs, mostly men, toiled in brutal conditions and had a terribly high mortality rate. Up north in Virginia, slaves had it easier being in a bit cooler climate and tobacco being a less physically demanding crop.

The Spanish were not happy about English encroachment on Florida and there were many raids on South Carolina especially during the several wars that broke out between England and Spain, but by 1700 South Carolina was strong enough to withstand Spanish attacks.
