the 20k figure has to do with your node actually getting data requests given the fact that more link staked means greater data request prioritization, and data requests are how you get paid.

Why is the light node a problem?

i'd take that figure with a grain of salt. nobody really knows how the economics of staking will play out just yet.

i'm no expert on this but form what i understand staking involves some amount of maintenance of the node and you always risk being penalized if you computer running the node experiences any down time. i've got 62k and i'll likely use linkpool just because i don't want to deal with the hassle of all that. that being said, don't be discouraged from looking into running your own node. it may be more profitable than using linkpool or some other staking pool.

I like that linkpool will cover the penalties for bad data, and In my mind the collective power of the pool will make is likely to deal in the highest paying contracts. I know it is relative to my investment but I think it will be more reliable than trying to eek by and take the risk on my own. I'd rather dedicate my time to other endeavors.

There is no simple verification in Ethereum, so if you get sybil attacked there is no way for light clients to tell they are being lied to. If you eclipse the light nodes running ChainLink software you can commit fraud en masse by giving their geth clients bad data.

The only solution is to only use trusted peers on your light client - which literally centralizes the entire network, defeating its purpose - or to run a full node on every single peer.

Interesting. So how would you be able to tell which light clients are being used by a ChainLink node?

They would presumably talk to each other (how else would you run a decentralized oracle if they don't know about each other?), so it would be as simple as getting the peer list after spinning up your own node.

The fix is simple - just run full nodes. I'm just baffled that running light nodes was even suggested for an "oracle" attached to a network without SPV.

But the transaction is signed in the link node, not in the ETH client, then it just sends the signed transaction using the light client. The fix is simple enough though.

Someone asked about it in Slack. He only showed it for demo purposes. The recommended format is full node.

I just realized something big. smartcontract.com will be taking a very small % of node operating costs in order to pay people salaries to maintain the code and keep it running at a very high quality. They are doing this because they believe that if people aren't paid a salary to continually update the code then it'll most likely fail and/or someone would come up with a newer/better oracle solution and everyone would have to switch making it a huge hurdle for businesses and could potentially cause a situation where only large enterprises could afford to use the network. TLDR It's in the ChainLinks teams best interest to market the absolute hell out of their network when the time is right as they'll be incentived by being paid to maintain the code and the bigger the network the more money they make along with node operators in general. We actually might make it. Marketing campaign will commmence and its going to be huge.

Because the Link cubes have to do something. I just received mine in the mail, and holy shit. I didn't realize they actually sent little plastic link cubes once you buy it. I now have 30000 of these little fuckers, boxes wall to wall, filled with these little plastic shits. After doing some research you apparently have to take the cubes to a little office to "stake" them (one will be opening in my city come "mainnet") Basically you just leave them the boxes full of cubes and they'll mail you your "returns" of more cubes over time. I asked Rory WTF was up, and he said that the team was going along with Sergey's delusion so he doesn't snap. He also told me that 22 of the 32 million was spent on these little cubes. The team was obviously getting paid out the ass, so they went along with it and make fake github commits to keep the delusion going. Now all I have are these fucking cubes, and I can't even take them to the dump because they would charge a fortune. Tl;dr don't buy Link
