I got measured at a doctors appointment as 6' 1.75" which isn't really that tall. But everywhere I go I'm taller than like 98% of people I see around me, and my friends all think I'm 6' 3" or 6' 4". Are most people just exaggerating their height and skewing the mean?

I'm 6ft/183cm (measured at night on a stadiometer) and I'm taller than like 80%+ of young guys in America.

Even in Europe (lived in Belgium) people regarded me as tall and I still felt a bit above average in Germany.

The highest average for young German men is 181 cm, not 6ft/183cm. Other sources indicate 179-180cm.

So there is the average for all Germans at 181. Now for some more adjustments:

- people in big cities are taller and this is where most of us are living
- ethnic Germans are taller than southern Europeans and Turks, Arabs etc.
- people from rich households are taller than those from poor ones
- ethnic Germans and people from rich households are more likely to go to university
- most of us attend university in big cities

In conclusion it's hard to say how tall the people around us are really but the estimates you see here aren't unrealistic.

More anecdotal: I am 183cm/6ft and I was still taller than most ethnic Germans guys I met while studying in Frankfurt. I didn't feel particularly tall like I do in America, but felt like an inch or an inch and a half above average (like 60th-70th percentile).

As I said, the percentage of non-ethnic Germans would have to be higher to skew the average by more than one to two centimeters.

You could also be suffering from a mental condition or some sort of negative feedback loop where you block out men your height or shorter and only pay attention to people taller than you. At 178cm, you should feel fairly average, if slightly below the statistical average. Like, a 5'8"-5'9"/173cm-175cm guy in America would be below average but he would still be considered average in most people's eyes.

now that you mentioned it, I used to study in Nijmengen for 5 years and I'm actually 246, while I didn't feel particularly tall like I do in Germany where most people are around 170, I was still maybe 0,005 cm taller than the average disabled Dutch 16 year old

This response pretty much confirmed my hypothesis. If you feel shorter than "almost everyone" at 178cm you likely have a mental disorder or are just seriously insecure. You are still well within a standard deviation of average height 1 in 2-3 guys you meet should be around your height or shorter.

So to help you out here I've used this calculator to find out where exactly you lie among young German men assuming a 7cm standard deviation (the average SD for men across the world)

If the average is 179cm: 44th percentile

If the average is 181cm: 35th percentile

You're just a bit below average, in other words 1 in 2 or 1 in 3 men should be your height or shorter.

People are growing fast here. I'm 5'11 and about half of the guys in my math uni class were around 190 cm. My dad is 5'7 and my grandad was 5'5. Don't think there is much genetical to height differences. People just move from countryside to cities and the next generation just gets taller.
