I am sure a lot of countries would have better railways if they had as many cheap workers as china.

I used it a number of times when I lived there and even though it was incredibly cheap compared to UK prices and extremely quick, I do have some complaints
1. Foreigners can buy tickets online but still have to go to the ticket office to pick them up. We can't use the automatic machines.
2. Most stations don't have automatic barriers that read passports at the station entrance, meaning we have to wait in a queue to have our ticket and ID manually checked
3. Even though every Chinese person CAN use the automatic barriers and ticket machines, lots still insist on going to the booths and the manual check.
4. Everyone has to have their bags x-rayed and go through a metal detector, taking up more time. Admittedly you have to do that for long distance coaches and even the subway but it still adds time to my journey.
5. Most HSR users are fine, but it is still China so you get people cutting in front of you at the ticket office, ID check, queue to get on the train, and getting off. You also get people blasting out their stupid fucking 农民 tunes on their Coolpad X29479, even if you pay for a first class ticket. I've heard of it happen in Business Class which is the most expensive ticket.

It makes sense. They have a quarter of the world's population and most of them are concentrated alongside the coast (despite the country's size, most of the West is inhospitable). It would make perfect sense for them to have that much railroad.

How do you define high speed railway? What speed is the cutoff? Because the train in that picture doesn't look particularly high speed to me. Maybe 160 km/h.

iirc the EU says that if an old line is upgraded to have a speed limit of at least 200 km/h, it can be considered high speed, but if a new line is being made, it needs to have a speed limit of at least 250 km/h to be considered high speed
