I've been to Kostmus, Vyborg and St petersburg. Murmansk area had the best roads by far and the commieblocks didn't look like they're going to grumble at any moment

If you have a decent car for some not so great roads. Try to visit those small villages. I just went and drove some small road and ended up visiting some old couple and stayed for few nights :D I didn't speak much Russian

I'll rent an offroad car and try to get to the more remote areas. I know the roads can get really nasty in Russia but that makes it more adventurous
