Sounds like its just a translation of the chinese characters used to write the name but not the actual meaning if you catch my drift.
With the exception of some countries like Japan it will just be a way to write the sound for the country and the character used doesnt matter which is why most of it is just garbled nonsense like Iraq and Turkey

They also use the Dutch word, "Duits", and not "Deutsch".
Similarly, they call the Netherlands by their Portuguese name, "Holanda".

Looked it up and it's whay I thought. The Portuguese would mention the perifidious Anglos to the Japs(or Inglês as they called them), and so they tried to translate English, which became Egeresu, which then became Igirisu.
