We've already seen that France is agressively reasserting itself in the face of Germany with Britain's leave, but what about Italy? Except that's something that won't happen overnight. To even meet the NATO's 2% norm, Germany already stated to need at least 5 years. The population difference also shrinks radically if you exclusively look at fighting age men. Those pensioners aren't going to make a difference.

Never say never. The EU is great at inventing enemies in order to push the agenda that a strong and centralized EU is "needed". Think about "unreliable Trump" (even though he did a full 180 on wanting to abandon Nato), the "loss of Britain" (even though Franco-British military cooperation is guaranteed to remain unchanged, as is its membership of NATO) and "hostile Russia" (doesn't stop the Germans from sucking up all that natural gas despite Poland's protests though).

Well, both the Dutch military and Czech military are slowly uniting with the German one. And I believe Romania is planning to join as well. Which means they have a military backing of 130 million people.
