It was a narrow isthmus anyway, but the that is still a good question.
The Ural mountains don't even fully separate "Europe" from Asia. There's a huge plain south of them that allows steppe hordes to simply ride from Central Asia all the way to France without any high mountains. And even the Urals themselves are mostly under 1000 m high and are easy to cross. The Alps, Carpathians, Pyrenees are much taller.

Europe has always been it's own political sphere since the Roman empire. If somthing happens within what is considered Europe today, everyone else took notice. If anything India should be it's own continent because it was a microcosm very much in this same way for a long time. Continents have no real solid definition but it's effectively a combination of geographic and politically related spheres if you will.

True, there was a political sphere of sorts in that region, but the actual shape varied. Asia Minor and the Levant were integral parts of the "European" sphere up until at least the Late middle Ages.
During the Roman Empire they were seen as part of the microcosm but Scandinavia wasn't. So culturally and economically the "Europe" of those days was the Mediterranean Basin.
Now "Europe" means everything North of the Mediterranean all the way to the Arctic Ocean. 50 years from now, if the interests demand it, "Europe" might have the Sahara or maybe the Alps as its southern border.
