As they expanded outwards and had to fight more enemies and patrol larger areas, they had to produce more tanks, armoured cars, planes and ships, which consumed more resources, which forced them to expand more, it was entirely a catch 22.

No they didnt. Manchuria only has moderate coal reserves and small amounts of iron, hardly enough to sustain a modernized nation of 73 million people and growing, it still needed oil, natural gas, rubber and had shortages of many metals most of which were located further into Asia and SEA.

The Americans were even supplying Japans oil at the time.

Serious doubt. Japan was at peak power during their conquest of Asia. Relatively speaking. Can you imagine japan being able to conquer chinas coastal cities in the modern era? Or fight the Americans now? In nominal terms, Japan is stronger today in terms of its alliances and friendly status with the western world. But it’s a shadow of its former self which could conquer and annex lands on its own.
