Honestly, I use "first floor" and "ground floor" interchangeably although I do use the former more.

With the American system you go two floors up you're on +3, if you go 2 floors down you're -2.

We use the American way when referring to floors or stories. But another common way of saying it is in stairs, which would be the British way.
E.G: "He lives three floors above me" or "he lives two stairs above me".
