Mexicans have lived in the US since the end of the American-Mexican War and possibly before (see tejanos and californios) although they only gained political power in the 1960’s.
Some states also had Mexicans/Natives in power much earlier then others, especially New Mexico.
So, there are three kinds of Mexican-Americans, Those that came here after the World Wars to work in the farms and ranches for cheap, those that lived here and were annexed into the United Statws after the Mexican-American war (these make up a small portion of Mexican Americans as intermarriage was common between Anglo settlers and Tejanos and those that have come in recently to work in industries.
