It's very easy to find work in Alaska if you're willing to suffer constantly for it. So if you're a poor guy from an even worse place, you can do some horrible fishing job for a couple years while working to get US citizenship. Plus, nobody will bother deporting you if you come to Anchorage illegally. Finally, if you're a total piece of useless human garbage, the state pays you a stipend for being a resident so if you want to live with the least effort possible you can.
You can drive through most of the state but I wouldn't recommend it, a lot of the roads leading to and from small towns are just beaten down dirt. Some of the really small towns, especially in the north, literally have no roads leading to them. You need a helicopter or snowmobile. Going through Canada and through the panhandle is one of the ways to move your shit to Alaska, but you'll have to find another way to get your guns up.

It's pretty and warmer than most of the rest, but it's full of transplants from California who moved to Alaska to "escape city life" only to move into another city...

Not good (LAN parties aren't uncommon), but some startups are trying to bring high speed internet to Alaska because they think global warming will get a lot of people to move in. Same reason lots of Chinese and Russians are buying up empty land for later flipping.

Growing up there was a unique experience because you couldn’t exactly buy the newest toys, games, or products advertised on tv unless you wanted to go all the way to Fairbanks or Anchorage. I mostly played soccer on the gravely snow or basketball on my friend’s driveway down the street. Everything was so ghetto and lame in the sense that most structures were made of sheet metal and wood and you fixed stuff with recycled materials.
Most people just drink or hang out or visit other parts of the state when they can.
