It's mostly the oil, the US has secured most of the oil needs for its allies by ensuring they control the sea lanes and by ensuring the outward flow of energy is uninterrupted. The arms deals are usually less about getting money and more about making sure Saudi Arabia is well equipped against its neighbours. A foreign power with Saudis oil holdings may not be so willing to export, which puts US alliances at risk.
